Fox has ordered a first season of the Gotham TV series.

Not coincidentally, the network has also rolled out an extended trailer for the show, a Batman prequel that follows young Detective James Gordon as he battles not-yet costumed versions of the Dark Knight's rogue gallery and counsels a grief-stricken Bruce Wayne.

The Mentalist and Rome creator Bruno Heller is behind Gotham, one of several shows upcoming shows based on DC Comics, shows like Flash and Constantine.  He's clearly going for something more sprawling than Smallville (in its original conception, anyways), making the fictional city a heightened version of Baltimore as seen on The Wire.  And we're not just saying that because Rawls (John Doman) shows up in this first look at the series, either.

Since Bruce (David Mazouz) is but a wee lad, decades away from donning a cape or cowl, the heroic lead here is his longtime comic book ally Jim Gordon.  This Gordon, played by Ben Mckenzie of Southland, is a veteran, a young family man trying to do good in a city that makes doing good awfully hard.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the network has officially ordered a first season, reportedly consisting of at least thirteen episodes.  Following the announcement, Fox debuted a shorter version of the above trailer during the much-hyped return of Jack Bauer, 24: Live Another Day.

About the Show
Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world's greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon's story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world's most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker?

GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), GOTHAM follows one cop's rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.
