Box Office Weekend: Dec. 13-15, The Hobbit Grabs Number One Spot

The second installment in the movie trilogy adapting J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit opened in first place, ranking fourth on the list of all-time biggest debuts in the month of December. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug grabbed an estimated $73.6 million over the weekend and combined with international earnings the film has a total of $204.8 million so far.

The other three December films that topped Smaug's debut are: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (last year), which set the December record with $84.6 million, I Am Legend ($77.2 million) and Avatar ($77 million).

Disney's Frozen snapped up the number two spot and the other new edition this weekend Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas, which is the eighth comedy starring Perry, came in third with $16.0 million.
