The latest attempt to adapt a bestselling series of young adult novels into a lucrative movie franchise, Divergent dramatizes the timeless experience of a teen who doesn't quite fit in. That's tough enough in the real world, but in the novel by Veronica Roth, being difficult to categorize makes you an enemy of the state.
Divergent is expected to kick off a series that would also adapt sequel novels Insurgent and Allegiant and hits theaters on March 21, 2014.
The story takes place in a dystopian future Chicago organized into five rigid castes. At the age of sixteen, every young citizen must decide which faction they'll devote their lives to:
Abnegation, who value selflessness
Dauntless, who cultivate bravery
Erudite, who are all about intellect
Amity, who mellow out in peace
Abnegation, who prize selflessness; and Candor, who are always honest.
