Story
Tomorrow, When the War Began is a pulse-pounding action thriller that follows the journey of eight high school friends in an Australian coastal town whose lives are suddenly and violently upended by an invasion that no one saw coming. Caitlin Stasey stars as 17-year-old Ellie Linton, a precocious teen who leads her best friends including Corrie (Rachel Hurd-Wood) and Kevin (Lincoln Lewis) to an isolated, deep in the woods camp site named ‘Hell.’
Upon returning, they come to grips with the fact that their country has been overrun by a mysterious, invading army. When the hostile armed forces become alerted to the presence of the teenagers, Ellie and her friends, along with a new recruit (apathetic stoner Chris Lang, played by Andrew Ryan) – must band together to escape, outwit and strike back against the mysterious enemy that has seized control of the their town and imprisoned their friends and loved ones.
Review
Australia's "Red Dawn". Based on a series of bestselling young adult author James Marsden's books, this details the lives of teenagers living out a last bit of fun with an adventurous road trip/camping vacation to a remote area, before school starts. Everything stays innocent and freewheeling enough as they leave their small town and head out for adventure in the outback. One night they are awakened by the sound of squadrons of jets zooming overhead... but think nothing of it.
When the teenagers pack up and return from their "secret" grotto, they find most of the homes abandoned, families missing, the power is out, dogs are shot dead, and vehicles burning. They soon realize Australia has been invaded by an unknown army. Brutal and uncompromising, anyone arguing with them in the "indoctrination" prison camps they've set up is shot dead.
The group, goes undetected for a time and they stay out of sight hiding in their empty homes. Then they start making plans to fight back, defend their town and rescue their loved ones. They also learn about the massive scope of the invasion, and realize they are on their own. Soon the enemy figures out they exist and where they are hiding, all hell breaks loose and survival becomes the main goal.
Overall pretty good film, filled with teenage angst and doubts and some fairly good special effects. Very reminicent of 'Red Dawn' and other; against the odds, fight or die films.
