Just a few days ago TNT announced the end of Leverage as they are not going to renew Leverage for a sixth season. In most cases this would be cause for alarm as most season finales are written to hook you so you come back next season.

Thankfully Dean Devlin saw the writing on the wall and "The Long Goodbye Job" was written to end the series just in case events went as they did. I’m very impressed with the writing of the episode, and that is saying something, because in my Interview with Dean Devlin he stated this episode was always the way he had seen the series ending.

Now that may sound easy, but keep in mind he also

It won't be the sort of merry Christmas Leverage fans were hoping for: TNT has made the announcement that this Tuesday's Season 5 finale of the Timothy Hutton-anchored hit will serve as a series finale.

Nate Leaves Parker Behind

Said a network rep via statement:

Leverage has thrilled audiences with its delightfully intricate plots, its stand up for the little guy attitude and its terrific performances
from stars Timothy Hutton, Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf and Aldis Hodge. But after five wonderful years, it’s time to say goodbye. Leverage will come to a close on Christmas at 9 pm, with a series finale that stands as one of the show’s best episodes… We want to thank the passionately devoted fans… who have been the driving force behind its success.”

The cancelation does not come as a shock to creator Dean Devlin.

In an exclusive TV Fanatic interview, Devlin discussed the possible end of this era and how he framed the upcoming episode to serve as a series finale if need be.

Tune in to "The Long Goodbye Job" at 10/9c on December 25 and visit TV Fanatic soon afterward for our extensive review.

Nate:  Let’s go steal Christmas

In the third of the three episode lead up to the Christmas Day season finale of Leverage that Dean Devlin discussed with me in Our Interview, we got to see the team working to keep kids safe in the "The Toy Job."

Right off the bat I have to mention that this is the first episode that Nate has mentioned his son in forever. The heartwarming story at the end about the trumpet his dad gave him and that he gave Sam was a sobering reminder that Nate has lost his father and his son in the last several years.

Nate, you are a stronger man than I.

Nate: Let’s go fake a bottle.

I may not be a wine fan, but even I can tell you the shortcuts that Frank Madigan (Hart Bochner) was taking in "The Corkscrew Job"  was not going to end well for someone, be it the alcohol or the growers.

I’m with Hardison. Give me a beer or cider instead any time. Case in point, did anyone else think his jicama and plum beer sounded interesting? But, also like Hardison, I was more than willing to ride along with the team as they brought Madigan down.

Leverage creator Dean Devlin recently wrote an open letter to fans discussing the uncertain fate of the action-packed TNT drama, which may or may not be picked up for a sixth season by the network.

In any case, the upcoming Leverage Season 5 finale will end as though it were the series finale.

Devlin recently spoke to TV Fanatic's Jim Garner about what may well be the show's final episode Christmas Day, and what that means for the characters and storylines. Here's our Q&A:

TV Fanatic: How do you feel about the evolution of the characters? Any stand out as a favorite?

Nate: Let’s go steal a dream.

And with those words, "The White Rabbit Job" was off and running with Nate, Sophie and the gang attempting to rehabilitate their mark (Charles Dodgson) instead of simply removing him.

I have to give it to the production crew for this episode, it was a daring outing to put together. From the details of the con, to the dreamnasium that Hardison put together, this was an impressive outing. It just took me a bit to get use to the fish-eye lens look the camera was using to achieve some of the effects.

However, once you got past the camera angles used to imply Dodgson’s “loopy state,” the underlying story was very well written and performed. Dodgson reminded

Our favorite team returned tonight, taking on the mega-store to try and save the mom-and-pop businesses in "The Low Low Price Job."

You had to love Brigid Brannagh as the tough as nails executive who only wants to climb the company ladder. She did a great job of holding her own against Nate and the squad for a couple of rounds, but in the end we knew that Nate would figure out a way to beat her, didn't we?

Of course, Nate just did what he does best: he let her beat herself, really. Given how clever and quick she was, I wondered if Nate was going to try and recruit her to Team Leverage. It certainly seems that if she could

As the counterpoint to the first half of this week’s two-hour summer  finale, "The Frame-Up Job" featured only Sophie and Nate – along with the return of Jim Sterling, everyone’s favorite Interpol agent.

Nate's Dilemma

I’m curious: does anyone know when Jim Sterling turned into Robert Palmer? Every one of his agents was an attractive woman with no facial expression. Honestly, had he started humming “Addicted to Love” I wouldn't have been surprised at all.

His choice of agents aside, I was also surprised how quick Sterling was to accuse Sophie and Nate of stealing the painting. I was expecting him to do a reveal that he knew they weren't behind it but had accused them to get their help. Hasn't Nate and the team saved his ass like a dozen times now? I guess his trust was kind of inferred with his offer to have Nate (and the art thief) come work for him.

Of course, Sterling delivered the best Leverage quote of the hour when he walked out and off-handedly asked if anyone knew about replacing the painting with forgeries and the curator took off running.

Did anyone else figure out the son was involved as well when the curator turned up in the pool dead? I felt a bit like Nate when I realized she had no reason to run toward the pool; the odds of falling just right to hit your head on the side edge and still make it into the water that far is pretty high.

Speaking of Nate and his deductions, I really enjoyed how they showed him going through the motions of with the black and white scenes where only he was in color as the spectator.  I hope we see more of this effect in future episodes, as it give us a more tangible feel for how he figures things out.

Am I alone in my confusion of why Nate doesn't trust Sophie? As she pointed out, they have been working together for five years and sleeping together for the last two. Did I miss an episode where Sophie went grifting and stealing?

I’m glad that Nate admitted he trusted her at the end. Oh, and I totally called the painting was of her when she wouldn't say why she knew it was a fake.

Overall this was a great episode and made for a fun summer finale. Don’t forget that Leverage returns in November to finish out its fifth season and TV Fanatic will be here with the latest news and reviews
