Cross Creek Pictures, Exclusive Media Group and Hammer Films are working on an adaptation of the science fiction novel, reports Variety. This comes after the companies announced today that Hammer has picked up film rights to the novel which is being co-produced by Cross Creek, Hammer and co-financed by Exclusive and Cross Creek Pictures.

Adapted by John Hilary Shepherd (Nurse Jackie), this takes place in an alternate Seattle in the 1880s. Here, the city's been walled in while a toxic gas has made remaining residents zombies, or "Rotters." The story follows a young widow who seeks her son in Seattle's underworld, having to deal with a criminal overlord, refugees as well as pirates flying airships.

Tor Books published the novel in 2009 and is the first in a series which is set in the period, followed by "Dreadnought" published last year and the more recently released Ganymede.

Cherie Priest’s Hugo-nominated Boneshaker shakes up steampunk with swashbuckling zombie adventure!

In the early days of the Civil War, Seattle inventor Levi Blue created a great gold mining machine. But on its test run, the Boneshaker ran amok, unleashing a gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.

Now, 16 years later, a wall encloses the toxic city. Just outside it lives Briar Wilkes and her teenaged son, who, despite her husband’s ruined reputation, are managing to survive. Until Zeke undertakes a crusade to rewrite history—a quest that will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.

Title: Boneshaker (Sci Fi Essential Books)

Product Description
In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska’s ice. Thus was Dr. Blue’s Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born. But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead. Now it is sixteen years later, and a wall has been built to enclose the devastated and toxic city. Just beyond it lives Blue’s widow, Briar Wilkes. Life is hard with a ruined reputation and a teenaged boy to support, but she and Ezekiel are managing. Until Ezekiel undertakes a secret crusade to rewrite history. His quest will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.
