Terra Nova on FoxTerra Nova - from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin comes an epic family adventure 85 million years in the making. TERRA NOVA follows an ordinary family on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as part of a daring experiment to save the human race.
Synopsis (Genesis Part 1 & 2 - Air Date: September 26, 2011)
In the opener of the Sci-Fi series following colonists who voyage to Earth's prehistoric past to create a new civilization.
The police raid the Shannon home and arrest the father, Jim Shannon. Shannon realizes he must take drastic measures to keep his family together after his wife, Elisabeth, is selected to travel back to prehistoric times to create a new civilization and, hopefully, help change the future.
The Shannon family joins the Tenth Pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova, the first colony established in this beautiful yet foreboding land. Jim Shannon, a devoted father with a checkered past, guides his family through this new world of limitless beauty, mystery and terror. Upon the Shannons' arrival, they are introduced to Commander Nathaniel Taylor, the charismatic and heroic first pioneer and leader of the settlement.
Taylor warns the travelers that while Terra Nova is a place of new opportunities and fresh beginnings, all is not as idyllic as it initially appears. Along with blue skies, towering waterfalls and lush vegetation, the surrounding terrain is teeming with danger - and not just of the man-eating dinosaur variety. There is also a splinter colony of renegades led by the battle-hardened Mira, who is vehemently opposed to Taylor and his leadership.
Full Recap (spoilers)
Monday Night on Fox brought the epic Television event "Terra Nova" to the small screen. I have to say I have been excited about seeing this one for awhile now. A Jurassic adventure without the two hour movie time restriction.
I was also excited about Spielberg's involvement in the other show "Falling Skies". I like it but I still hoped for more than the show delivered. Don't get me wrong I'm still watching Season 2 when it airs next year.
Okay, enough lead in, let's get to the show... and jump to the 22nd century - on a sun scorched earth where humans have to wear breathers , oranges are rare, and population control is enforced to only 2 children per family limit. There is a sign that reads "A Family is 4". However, the show opens focusing on the Shannon family who has a third child.
The Shannons are caught breaking a population control law and, Jim, the father, after a quick fight trying to protect his third child, gets arrested and sent to prison.
Jump 2-years later and a plan to reach Terra Nova is put into motion. A time rip anomaly enables a one way trip back 85 million years in time. The whole family makes it to Terra Nova and are reunited at last but in a strange new world.
The Shannons start to settle into their abode as Zoe, the youngest daughter and the one child over the legal two children per family feeds some of the local dinosaurs.
First day in a new world and Jim begins his job working in the agricultural division. Apparently weeding is a full time job and machetes are the tools of choice to remove the vines from the perimeter fence. Also, dinosaurs are not the only big things around, so are the bugs.
The son, Josh, of our new family isn't happy about being in Terra Nova because he left behind the girl he loved.
But after trying some strange fruit and meeting a new girl, at least he finally smiles.
Meanwhile, the wife, Dr. Shannon, settles into her duties in the local medical facility which involves pulling giant leeches off patients, at least on her first day.
Josh skips orientation to hang with his new friend, Sky, who introduces him to three of her friends. Apparently, Josh has a knack for getting himself into trouble. He decides to follow Sky past the fence or "OTG" (Outside the Gate) into the surrounding forest to meet up with her friends.
While on the outside, Josh learns about writings on the rocks surrounding the swimming hole his new friends show him.
While Josh is exploring, his father, who used to be a cop back in the future, notices a man acting strangely and follows him ultimately preventing an assassination attempt on Commander Taylor, the leader of the new colony. Commander Taylor invites Jim, on a drive to tell him about things he might need to know about this new place. It seems a group known as the "Sixers" split off from the main settlement and started their own colony. Commander Taylor doesn't know who sent them or even who he can trust in the future. But the "Sixers" have an agenda and it's not a peaceful one. Because of Jim's quick reaction in stopping the assassination attempt, Commander Taylor invites Jim to become part of his security force and while they stand on a ridge over-looking the base, they see two "Sixers" vehicles moving rapidly towards the base. The Commander immediately calls to warn the base that hostiles where moving in and he and Jim gather themselves to intercept the vehicles.
The "Sixers" are running from Carnosaurs, creatures which resemble unhappy T-Rex's hunting for food. The base security use sonic weapons to drive the beasts away, however, the Carnosaurs are only half of the hostile attack.
The "Sixers" are allowed into the base for protection, however, their visit is completely unwelcomed and uninvited. The "Sixers" sole purpose for their unannounced visit is that they want their man back and are willing to make an exchange. The "Sixers" control the local quarry and offer some raw ore materials in exchange for their man and some medical supplies.
Meanwhile, Josh's new friends show him the real reason they go "OTG" - they are making moonshine out of some of the local fruits.
While the teens are drinking their moonshine, the base discovers that there is a missing rover. The security team searches through video footage for that rover and discovers video feed of Josh and Sky leaving the base.
After the "Sixers" leave the base with their man and medical supplies, they come across the teens' rover in the woods and decide to strip the power cell from the vehicle. While pulling the power cell, the men get attacked. The teens hear the screeches of the dinosaurs and decide that it is time to leave and travel back to the rover. By then, however, the rover is without the power cells and the beasts have the teens surrounded and trapped inside the vehicle.
Back at the base, Jim and a rescue team are heading out to search for the group of kids.
While the teens are under attack by the dinosaurs, which they call, "Slashers", one of the members of the group, Tasha panics and takes off running rather than staying inside the vehicle.
The search party finds Tasha bloodied and delirious but still alive. Tasha is given medical attention while the rest of the search party continue on.
Meanwhile, back at the rover, the kids decide they need to make a run for it, but before they can, the "Slashers" attack and hurt Hunter, another group member, pulling him out of the vehicle. Then Max gets attacked, just when all hope seems lost, the search team arrives.
The final scenes of the episode shows the entire Shannon family reunited after a rough day and enjoying the moon they see in the night sky. A sight that doesn't exist in 2149 the future world they came from. Knowledge sets in that this new place holds both beauty and danger, but for now everyone is safe.
Next Week - Episode 3 - Instinct
Jim and Taylor find themselves trying to save the colony from attacking Pterosaurs. Elisabeth discovers an ex-boyfriend is also living in Terra Nova and may have been responsible for her being recruited.
