Valve has announced that one of its most popular games, Left 4 Dead 2, will receive Steam Workshop support much like its other titles, which includes Portal 2, Team Fortress 2 and the newly released DOTA 2.
In other games, fans can participate in the creation of content for the game, much of which sees its way into Valve’s titles as vanity items for player characters in games like DOTA 2 and Team Fortress 2. Likewise, Portal 2’s built-in “Perpetual Testing Initiative” editor allows players to create puzzles and missions for the game to share with others and engage them intellectually.
For Left 4 Dead 2, Valve has announced plans to offer an expanded scripting tool for the game so that modders can create what the studio calls “deeper and more varied experiences inside of Left 4 Dead 2.”
The implementation of Steam Workshop into the game will allow players to browse, rate, and discuss community created add-ons for the game, including new maps, weapons, and items. Similar to the preexisting Mutations, which change how the game is played, items from Steam Workshop can be laid on top of existing campaign maps or included with entirely new ones.
I’m already counting on someone to come up with a mutation that turns the Left 4 Dead 2 crew into the cast of Shaun of the Dead.
