Batcave Brooding in Another 'The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1' ClipBatcave Brooding in Another 'The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1' Clip

Yet another official clip from The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1 has arrived online, showing a more low-key, introspective moment from Warner Premiere's animated version of Frank Miller's massively influential 1986 masterpiece.

The degree to which Miller's four-issue story has informed subsequent Batman tales in every different medium can't really be overstated.  In fact, its impact goes well beyond just Batman, but let's stay focused here.  The story finds a much older Bruce Wayne emerging from superhero retirement as an even more grizzled, hard as nails Caped Crusader who grows ever more extreme in response to a changed world.

Coming out of retirement is a big step for a Bruce who has spent years getting his adrenaline-fix from reckless race car driving and the like.  This new clip, here thanks to Coming Soon, has Bruce getting all contemplative in his mothballed Batcave.  Alfred interrupts Master Wayne's thoughts with some signature drollery, but Bruce is thinking about the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin.

The emotional effect of a pre-resurrection Jason Todd is important to the story, as teenage girl Carrie Kelly ends up becoming un-retired Batman's sidekick and his principal connection to the world at large.  Peter Weller voices the older Bruce Wayne, with Ariel Winter as Carrie Kelly.  Other voice actors in the mix include David Selby as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Wade Williams as Harvey Dent, and Michael McKean as Dr. Bartholomew Wolper.

They're working under director Jay Oliva, a Warner Premiere veteran who also moonlights as a storyboard artist on the likes of next year's Man of Steel.

We've seen two clips before.  One had Batman impressing some cops on his first night back out in Gotham, the other had the leader of the Mutants hollering at the Dark Knight.

As the title suggests, The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1 only adapts the first half of Miller's story.  We follow Batman's re-emergence, his battle with the Mutant gang, and Kelly jumping into the role of Robin.  For Batman's battles with Joker and Superman, audiences will have to wait for 2013's The Dark Knight Returns: Part 2.

For now, though, there's The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1 on Blu-ray and DVD, as well as VOD and digital download on September 25th.
