Red Dawn is a remake of John Milius's ridiculous but thoroughly enjoyable 1984 action that pitted a bunch of high school students armed with AKs and RPGs against a militarily superior Soviet invasion force in middle America. Though this new take has its roots in the 80's, the trailer more readily calls to mind the 90's by using Filter's "Hey Man, Nice Shot," a remarkably overused trailer song that I mistakenly believed had been played out.
Filter aside, the trailer provides pretty much exactly what you'd expect. The young cast looks very capable, and action-master Dan Bradley is obviously putting his years of experience as a second unit director and stunt coordinator to good use with a lot of pew-pew-pew and explosions.
It's available to view right here or in high definition at Yahoo! Movies.
So, in addition to the new invaders, there look to be a few differences between this Patrick Swayze-less version and the original movie. One is the addition of an EMP strike to kick things off. Another concerns Jed, the character originally played by Swayze and here essayed by Hemsworth. This time, he's been given a background as a Marine, rather than an ordinary student. Presumably this was done to bolster the movie's credibility, which really shouldn't be a big concern in a Red Dawn movie.
Hemsworth, three years younger, is throwing down like Thor, and he's joined by the likes of Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Will Yun Lee, Alyssa Diaz, and Brett Cullen.
Red Dawn arrives on November 21st.
