ContainmentI am a self-described and unabashed technophile. When it comes to devices and gadgets, I'm a pusher, enabler, and an addict all rolled into one. As I write this post, I am surrounded by no fewer than four phones, three tablets, five computers (if you count the Chromebox), four keyboards (three of them with unique varieties of mechanical keyswitches), and four different pointing devices (two mice, a multi-touch trackpad, a Wacom tablet, and a Leap Motion gesture control system on pre-order). My fascination with technology goes far beyond a lust for novelty, convenience, and ever-better specifications.. My obsession is not so much about how we will shape future generations of technology as it is about how technology will shape future generations.

The profound and unpredictable influence of technology on culture is at the heart of my recently released novel Containment. The plot centers around the coming of age of Gen V, the first generation to be born and raised on Venus. Growing up within the confines of the colony -- and among some of the most accomplished engineers alive and the most advanced technology ever conceived -- results in Gen V becoming the most intelligent and technology-savvy generation in the history of humanity. However, it also means that they experience very little of their world firsthand.

Gen V's entire reality--everything they know about Earth, about Venus, and even about themselves--is deliberately constructed and carefully controlled by the colony's founders. But Gen V will soon come to learn that there is much more happening around them than those in power would have them believe.
