A naive fat her and son wander through an Italy full of ancient churches and half-finished building sites, encountering absurdist situations and accompanied by a talking left-wing raven.
Midway through they’re transported to the Middle Ages for a half-hour segment, becoming a hapless pair of friars sent by St Francis to preach to birds.
Pasolini’s picaresque comedy pokes fun at the Church, capitalism and Marxism, and finds the maverick Italian director in an indulgent mood.
You couldn’t call it a barrel of laughs but how often do you see a movie with sung credits?
