Bourne Again: Story-Centric 'Bourne Legacy' FeaturetteBourne Again: Story-Centric 'Bourne Legacy' Featurette

A new featurette for The Bourne Legacy was found floating in the ocean with no memory of itself a Swiss bank account number embedded under its skin today.  This behind the scenes nugget includes plenty of stuff from the film and implicitly argues as to why the audience should be psyched for a Bourne movie without Matt Damon.  It is also the first Bourne-related anything I've seen in years that didn't include characters gravely saying "Jason Bourne" roughly seventeen times every three seconds.

This glimpse into next month's sequel is mostly focused on the story, briefly setting up Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross character and the notion that, in exposing Treadstone during The Bourne Ultimatum, our erstwhile hero threatened to make public a more expansive conspiracy, a program with far deadlier and more illegal assassinations going on right under our noses.  Threatened, the bureaucrats behind said program liquidate their assets, i.e. kill everyone, save for Cross and Marta, a scientist who tinkered with the dude's chromosomes.  From there, the featurette goes on to essentially promise that though there's no Bourne, Cross will be doing appropriately Bourne-y stuff while he and Marta, played by Rachel Weisz, are on the lamb.

You can view the video below or at Apple, where it is available of the H-est of D's.

With Paul Greengrass opting not to return to the franchise that he refined with The Bourne Supremacy and its follow-up, Universal went with a familiar franchise name as director: Tony Gilroy.  He contributed significantly to all three previous scripts as a screenwriter, and his directorial credits consist of Michael Clayton and Duplicity.  Here, he shares screenplay credit with his brother, Dan Gilroy, whose work includes The Fall and Real Steel.  The duo wasn't working from any particular Robert Ludlum, but even the first three movies only resembled the novels in passing (by the last one, it was really only the title that was the same).

Renner takes over as the face of the series, with Weisz as a sidekick/love interest like those played by Franka Potente and Jula Stiles in past installments.  Their fellow franchise newcomers include Edward Norton, Oscar Isaac, Donna Murphy, Stacy Keach, and Corey StollJoan Allen, David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Corey Johnson, Paddy Considine, and Albery Finney, meanwhile, are all actors we've seen before who return here.

The Bourne Legacy bournes it up in theaters on August 10th.
