New 'The Campaign' Poster Pushes It Real GoodNew 'The Campaign' Poster Pushes It Real Good

There's a new trailer for the comedy The Campaign kicking around online today, one that offers up just a slice of the absurdity that is jammed into this electoral comedy.  It's brief, but it's a showcase for ruggedly handsome leading men Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis.  Both are doing ramped-up variations on their familiar personas, with Ferrell going arrogant, dimwitted, and screamy, while Galifianakis goes dimwitted and oddly feminine as he drops non sequiturs all over the place.

Ferrell plays Cam Brady, a man whose unearned confidence and entitlement grow from his having been a South Carolina Congressman who has run unopposed in every one of his elections.  The moron meets his equally moronic match in Marty Huggins, an imbecile recruited by a pair of politically active billionaires specifically to unseat Brady.  Hilarity ensues.

This is a short trailer, clocking in at just over a minute.  As the presence of Ferrell probably indicated to you, this doesn't quite look like a scathing indictment or a sharp satire, opting instead for comedic exaggeration and surreal, over the top ludicrousness.  Punching an adorable little baby full-on in the face, for example.  Or playing the keytar while flying over a crowd.

Ferrell and Galifianakis both look like they're having a good time here, and one wonders just how much of the riffing seen in this trailer will actually show up in the movie.  This is produced by regular Ferrell collaborator Adam McKay, and it seems to be done in his heavily improvisational style.

McKay's producing, but it's Jay Roach serving as director.  Roach has made many a comedy, from all three Austin Powers movies to Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, and Dinner With Schmucks.  He also has a very different style, having directed the two straightforward, fact-based HBO political dramas Recount and Game Change, based respectively on the 2000 and 2008 presidential elections.

In addition to Galifianakis and Ferrell, the cast includes Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Katherine LaNasa, Sarah Baker, Amelia Jackson-Gray, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, and Dan Aykroyd.

The Campaign hits theaters on August 10th.

Check out Galifianakis's very similar Seth Galifianakis character from his Live at the Purple Onion documentary.
