First 'Bourne Legacy' Clip: Renner to the RescueFirst 'Bourne Legacy' Clip: Renner to the Rescue

If you've seen a trailer or a TV spot for the new sequel/sort of spin-off The Bourne Legacy, then you've probably seen Aaron Cross, the stronger, faster heir to Jason Bourne's mantle, plummeting down a narrow alleyway, landing on a bad guy, then disarming another.  It's a cool stunt, one Jeremy Renner pulls off with style, and it's being used as the money shot in much of the movie's advertising.  Now, you can see it with a little more context, as the first clip from The Bourne Legacy is available to view online.

Actually, the clip shows that the big drop doesn't come about in quite as succinct a manner as you've seen in TV spots; Cross does a bit of rooftop-hopping first, evading the local authority figures.  He's doing so thanks to a shrieked warning from Marta his fellow fugitive and former scientist for a Treadstone-like super assassin program, played by Rachel Weisz.

The clip you see below is also available in high definition at IGN, where it debuted today.

With Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass, the director who elevated the franchise with sequels The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, opting not to return for the time being, Universal is continuing the series while leaving the door open for the two guys most associated with it.  Tony Gilroy, the writer-director of Michael Clayton and Duplicity, is the co-writer and director making it happen.  Gilroy contributed to the scripts for all three previous Bourne movies, so he's not exactly a new hand here.

In order to tie the new installment into the series, The Bourne Legacy takes place concurrently with much of The Bourne Ultimatum, as Bourne shows up in New York and publicly blows the lid off of Treadstone.  The program now public, desk-jockeys with a lot to lose scramble to shutter its replacement program, meaning killing a bunch of assets, Cross and Marta included.

There are familiar supporting players from previous installments, such as Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Corey Johnson, Paddy Considine, Scott Glenn, and Albert Finney.  The new faces, led by Renner and Weisz, include Edward Norton, Oscar Isaac, Corey Stoll, Donna Murphy, and Stacy Keach.

The Bourne Legacy drops into theaters and beats up bad guys on August 10th.
