SDCC 2012: Gandalf Ambles in a Poster for 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'SDCC 2012: Gandalf Ambles in a Poster for 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'

If you're going to Comic-Con and plan to spend any time at all in Hall H for any of the big movie panels, odds are you'll be anxiously awaiting the Warner Bros. presentation, during which The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson will be presenting footage from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.  In addition to putting your eyeballs on Middle Earth visuals through a novel delivery system, you'll be able to get your grubby meathooks on this Comic-Con exclusive poster.

The poster is a nice contrast to the crowded madness that is San Diego during Comic-Con, actually.  Totally relaxed Halfling's Leaf enthusiast and journeyman wizard Gandalf the Grey strolls through the Shire, presumably on the way to the quaint beauty of Hobbiton, with an adorable little hobbit hole in the background.  Since Ian McKellen hasn't been in the more ramshackle Grey persona since The Fellowship of the Ring, it's also likely to tickle many a nostalgia bone.

As you'd expect, the poster debuted on Peter Jackson's Facebook page, where he announced that the two-part J.R.R. Tolkein adaptation finally wrapped principal photography on Friday.

Warner Bros.' big The Hobbit panel is set for Saturday, July 14th, alongside panels for Zack Snyder's Superman reboot Man of Steel and Guillermo Del Toro's mega-monster movie Pacific Rim.  Word is that the studio will use the opportunity to show off The Hobbit's use of 48 frames per-second 3D, a technical step that met with a mixed reception at exhibitor event CinemaCon earlier this year.  While it's by no means ideal to see 3D footage on the screens in Hall H, it will at least provide a taste of just how 48 fps will look and feel.

It's coincidental that Del Toro will be in Hall H for Pacific Rim, since he spent quite a long time developing the two The Hobbit films as director before ultimately leaving the endeavor and spending some time unsuccessfully trying to get At the Mountains of Madness made before ending up on his robots vs. monsters epic.  Alongside returning LotR screenwriters Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, Del Toro actually has a writing credit on both of the prequel movies.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arrives in theaters on December 14 this year, followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again a year later on December 13, 2013.
