SDCC 2012: First Poster for Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pacific Rim' Goes Big SDCC 2012: First Poster for Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pacific Rim' Goes Big

It doesn't matter that there's still just over a year until Pacific Rim hits theaters.  Guillermo del Toro, the lovable and loquacious director behind Pan's Labyrinth, Cronos, the Hellboy movies, The Devil's Backbone, and the ludicrously fun Blade II, is making a movie about giant monsters fighting giant robots.  That should be all you need to know.  If, however, you're stubbornly resisting the movie's obvious appeal with questions like, "But how big are the monsters and robots," then the movie's first poster answers with an emphatic, "Huge."

Actually, it only answers the size of the robots, called Jaegers, with our first look at one of the technological behemoths, but since the Jaegers were created specifically to combat massive, city-destroying beasts called Kaiju, we can reasonably infer that the monsters are roughly equivalent in size.  This poster includes two human pilots, probably played by Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba standing astride the Jaeger's shoulder just to give a sense of the thing's scale.  Some seagulls also add to the feeling of immensity.

If you're hanging out in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 14th for the Warner Bros. presentation, then there's a good chance you'll be going home with a copy of this bad boy.  Like the freshly revealed poster for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, this one is a Comic-Con exclusive that'll be handed out to Con attendees.

Along with The Hobbit and the Superman reboot Man of Steel, Pacific Rim is part of the Warner Bros. panel in San Diego next week.  Del Toro's large-scale science fiction adventure only recently finished production, so the panel probably won't include a lot of visual effects work, but it is expected the first footage from the film is expected to play.  It'd be  damn shame if the first look didn't include monsters and robots.

The studio is also likely to show off The Hobbit footage in 3D and provide a first look at footage from Man of Steel.  So yeah, check out Hall H on Saturday.

Hunnam stars as a Jaeger pilot alongside Elba and Rinko Kikuchi, with a supporting cast that includes Ron Perlman, Clifton Collins Jr., and Charlie Day of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Horrible Bosses.

Pacific Rim thunders into theaters on July 12, 2013.
