First Look at Matt Damon and a Future-Gun in Neill Blomkamp's 'Elysium'First Look at Matt Damon and a Future-Gun in Neill Blomkamp's 'Elysium'

Happy Independence Day to America!  Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to District 9 moves the action from the writer-director's native Johannesburg, South Africa right here to the U.S. of A.  The first image from Elysium has arrived online during the all-American holiday, so take a break from cooking out to take a peek at also all-American Matt Damon aiming a bit of futuristic weaponry and some rather painful-looking physical technology.

Blompkamp's directorial debut approached racial and socioeconomic differences in Joburg as an obvious sci-fi allegory with an outrageous sense of humor, lots of violence, and alien guns that pureed humans instantly.  Between the big gun, the plug in Damon's bald head, and the hardware on his arms, Elysium also looks to include a futuristic military-industrial complex.  We learned in mid-June just what the allegorical aspect will be this time, and here's a refresher via the synopsis that made its way into the wilds of the internet at the time:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard the government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

And here's your first official look at the movie:

The image showed up in Entertainment Weekly's big Comic-Con preview issue, but the actual scan above is here thanks to The PlaylistElysium will be part of the Sony Pictures presentation in Hall H at San Diego Comi-Con next Friday, along with Rian Johnson's Looper and this August's Total Recall remake from director Len Wiseman.

Damon stars in the science fiction actioner alongside the likes of Jodie Foster, Diego Luna, Alice Braga, William Fichtner, Sharlto Copley, Faran Tahir, Talisa Soto, and Wagner Moura.

Elysium is still a ways out, as it's scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 1, 2012.
