'The Amazing Spider-Man' Made $35 Million on Tuesday'The Amazing Spider-Man' Made $35 Million on Tuesday

From here on out, The Amazing Spider-Man can lay claim to a "biggest _____ of all time" box office record, even if it's an exceedingly specific one.  Sony's reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, retelling Spidey's origin story ten years after Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man, has proven that Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's fifty year-old Marvel Comics icon can still draw a pretty big crowd, even when an entirely new cast acts out an entirely familiar story.

According to studio estimates, The Amazing Spider-Man earned $35 million in its theatrical debut in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on Tuesday.  That qualifies the sophomore feature from (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb as the biggest Tuesday performance of all time, usurping the opening of Transformers back in 2007.  Michael Bay's first Hasbro adventure earned $27.8 million it its first full day, though shows officially began on Monday afternoon, where the robots-in-disguise movie made an additional $8.8 million.

That $35 million single-day haul includes $7.5 million from midnight shows.  That's the same as Iron Man 2's earnings at midnight in May of 2010.  This year, Marvel Studios' The Avengers bagged $18.5 million, and obviously The Amazing Spider-Man isn't an event on that level, but it did equal the midnight receipts of Spider-Man 3 back in 2007.  Attendance was lower, however, because of inflation and the added bonus of 3D and IMAX 3D.  Raimi's last Spider-Man also opened before midnight showings exponentially increased in popularity over the last three years.

Let's put the opening day of this new movie, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, into the context of the franchise.  Basically, it's the smallest first day of the series, but that's not very surprising, given the popularity of the past movies and the tough sell of another origin story.  The $35 million debut falls behind the $59.8 million of Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man 2's $40.4 million, and Spider-Man's $39.4 million.  That's not adjusted for inflation.

This new webslinging movie is on track to bring in around $150 million over the super-extended six-day weekend between Tuesday and Sunday.  Stay tuned for the final figures later this week.
