First Look at Charlie Hunnam & Rinko Kikuchi in 'Pacific Rim'First Look at Charlie Hunnam & Rinko Kikuchi in 'Pacific Rim'

Since Guillermo del Toro has publicly vowed never to make a movie without at least one monster it, we can be sure that the giant, city-crushing invaders in Pacific Rim will be lovingly created and lavished with attention.  So far, though, we're seeing nothing from the monstrous side of things and just a few peeks at the anime-inspired human resistance.  Today, a new image from the film provides our first look at stars Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi as mech-pilots out to save the world.

The first official image from Pacific Rim arrived online a month ago and showed Idris Elba in some futuristic piloting gear.  This new look has Hunnam and Kikuchi wearing very similar outfits, standing in front of rigs that must be involved in piloting their Jaeger, a massive robot designed to defend humanity against the equally-massive Kaiju. The costumes are very stylized and unapolectically sci-fi, while the mechanical setting is spiced up by director del Toro's usual attention to eye-catching color.

This image premiered in the latest print issue of Entertainment Weekly, but the scan is here courtesy of Shock Till You Drop.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are expected to drop the first footage from Pacific Rim at San Diego Comic-Con next week.  Guillermo del Toro is basically a deity at the convention and draws a crowd whether he's bringing goodies or not, so expect him to present something special from this one, in addition to be his usual loquacious, charmingly foul-mouthed self.

Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Idris Elba star in the film as mech-pilots, but the cast also includes Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr., Diego Klattenhoff, Robert Kazinsky, and del Toro fixture Ron Perlman, whose work with director includes Cronos, Blade II, and both Hellboy movies.

Pacific Rim is set to arrive in theaters on July 12, 2013.

Travis Beacham is credited with the screenplay, and just in case you need it, here's the official synopsis:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
