Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that they have officially agreed to purchase Gaikai, the cloud-based gaming company, for 380 million USD. This acquisition will give Sony a definitive leg-up on the console competition by offering streaming game service via internet-compatible devices.
President and Group CEO of SCE, Andrew House, enthusiastically commented on the merger.
“SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices," said House.
“We’re honored to be able to help SCE rapidly harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide," stated David Perry, CEO of Gaikai.
The rumor about the two companies teaming up for backwards compability on the PlayStation 3 had consumers on the edge of their seats, but no official word came forward. Hopefully, this dynamic duo will take a look at some archived titles and open up a gigantic library of classic games.
