Awesome-O: First 'Robot & Frank' TrailerAwesome-O: First 'Robot & Frank' Trailer

The first theatrical trailer for Robot & Frank has sidled its way online.  Like the title would lead you to expect, the movie is about a guy named Frank and his robot.  Also, it looks every shade of excellent.

Frank Langella stars as Frank, a retired jewel thief in the near future who lives by himself until he's given a domestic robot that looks very much like a generic brand Asimo.  Frank and the 'bot, voiced with detached serenity by Peter Sarsgaard, slowly but surely become genuine friends.  As he grows attached to his mechanical pal, Frank also takes up his old criminal ways, using Robot to aid him in a series of meticulously planned heists.

This trailer, which you can watch in high definition at Yahoo! Movies, is low-key and observational, selling the movie on its characters and its sincere tone.  It doesn't hurt that the movie also boasts a supporting cast of ringers who can each carry their own films ably.  This looks very much to be Langella's show, however.

That supporting cast includes Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Jeremy Sisto, and Jeremy Strong.  Coincidentally, Marsden and Langella previously played father and son in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, but that's neither here nor there, I suppose.

Frank & Robot played at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was very positively received.  The movie marks the feature directorial debut of Jake Schreier, who is working from a screenplay by Christopher D. Ford.

The film hits theaters on August 24th.
