International 'Taken 2' Trailer: Neeson Issues Threats, Breaks NecksInternational 'Taken 2' Trailer: Neeson Issues Threats, Breaks Necks

The very first trailer for Taken 2 has arrived online, and though it's designed specifically for audiences in the United Kingdom, those of us in the colonies can nonetheless stuff our faces on it as well.  Everything you would expect from a trailer for the Taken sequel is here.  It has more beautiful European locations, this time with Istanbul standing in for Paris.  It has Liam Neeson as taciturn ass-kicker and devoted father Bryan Mills.  It has kidnapping.  It has stunts.  Most importantly, it has Mills breaking necks.

Neeson related last month that the sequel has Mills working in Istanbul before he himself being abducted, tortured, and taken to the Albanian town from which the first film's villains sprang, leaving it up to his formerly-imperiled daughter to bail him out.  We see now in the trailer that those bad guys do indeed try for Mills, but end up absconding with his wife, leading him to team up with daughter.

For thematic symmetry, the new bad guy is, in fact, the father of one of the villains from Taken, and his family's grief at the torture and slaughter of their disreputable kin suggests that this franchise is really about and endless cycle of retribution and ultimately pointless violence.  Like Munich.  Except not really, because Taken is obviously about Neeson snapping necks and nothing more.

The trailer debuted at MSN UK.

While your American mind reels at this example of a unique global culture, comfort yourself wit the fact that Liam Neeson continues to embrace his action star status with the Taken sequel, and he'll once again be joined by Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen as his daughter and wife, respectively.  Luc Besson is also back producing the new version, as well as co-writing with Robert Mark Kamen. Original director Pierre Morel did not return, however.  In his place is Olivier Megaton, another Besson-veteran who previously directed Transporter 3 and Columbiana.

Taken 2 is scheduled for Stateside release on October 5th.
