The Alien prequel kicks off with a prologue featuring an extraterrestrial Engineer on what may or may not be Earth seeding the planet with life via his own demise. Weta Digital was responsible for creating the Engineer's infection with that mysterious black ooze, going from outside of its body to the infinitesimal building blocks of its being. In the first of these two videos, Weta Digital Visual Effects Supervisor Martin Hill discusses the challenges of the Engineer's destruction.
Then there's the titular spaceship itself, which was created by the folks at the Moving Picture Company. MPC also created the exterior environs of the alien moon where most of the action happens, as well as the Engineer's craft, which Visual Effects Supervisor Charley Henley describes as "The Juggernaut." After detailing a bit about Prometheus' landing, Ross then goes into the mid-air rendezvous between the two vessels.
Both videos debuted at The Daily.
We know that director Ridley Scott was hoping to make a Prometheus sequel after he finishes up his current project, the Cormac McCarthy-scripted The Counselor, but we don't yet know if 20th Century Fox will be writing a check to see the Alien franchise continue. So while we may not conclusively discover the motives of the Engineers or just we did to so piss off our intergalactic progenitors, we'll certainly have plenty of time to discuss the ambiguities of Prometheus, whether intentional or not. And that's worth something. Any talk of a movie that goes beyond the obligatory pre-release hype or simplistic post-view bitching is good for everyone.
So if you haven't seen it, go check out Prometheus in 3D and start talking about it, whether you love it or are frustrated by it.
