Jonah Hill Will Show Up in Tarantino's 'Django Unchained'Jonah Hill Will Show Up in Tarantino's 'Django Unchained'

It's not often that high-profile casting news hits for a movie that has released both a domestic and international trailer.  Yet here we are with word that writer-director Quentin Tarantino is adding a familiar face to Django Unchained, his Spaghetti Western-influenced tale of retribution in the Antebellum South.  That face belongs to none other than Jonah Hill, who has been associated with this film before.

Last week we saw the outstanding American teaser for Django Unchained, followed by an even better UK teaser this week.  While this early marketing hits, Tarantino is still in the midst of production on location in Louisiana, and according to Deadline, The Weinstein Company has locked down Hill to appear in the movie, but his role is unknown.

The story follows Django, a former slave and Dr. King Schultz, a bounty hunter who frees Django in exchange for his assistance in capturing a bounty.  In addition to his liberty, Django negotiates for Schultz's assistance in tracking down and freeing his beloved wife, Broomhilda.  The quest to find her leads the duo to Candyland, a plantation presided over by the villainous Calvin Candie.

Tarantino wrote the role of Scott Harmony for Hill and initially pursued the actor to play the minor but important character, a meek young Southern aristocrat who briefly owns Broomhilda before Candie manipulates and muscles him out of the beautiful German-speaking slave.  When scheduling issues got in the way of Hill's involvement, Sacha Baron Cohen signed up to play the character, who only appears in a few scenes early in the film.

So you might naturally assume, since Baron Cohen's commitment to promoting The Dictator caused him to vacate the role last month, that Hill would be stepping in to play Harmony, the part written for him.  That's not the case, likely because Harmony's scenes may have already been filmed.  Regardless, we don't know who Hill is playing.  But this is still cool.  Rumors have been bouncing around that Tarantino has a few surprising little cameos planned for the film, and Hill's sudden involvement suggests those rumors are at least partially true.

Django Unchained, then will represent the first of two upcoming appearances alongside Leonardo DiCaprio for the recent Oscar-nominee and 21 Jump Street star.  Hill is set to play the second lead with DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's financial thriller The Wolf of Wall Street, which starts principal photography in August.  DiCaprio plays Calvin Candie in Django Unchained, with Jamie Foxx as the eponymous former slave, Kerry Washington as Broomhilda, and Christoph Waltz as Schultz.

Django Unchained is scheduled for release on December 25th of this year.
