'Resident Evil: Retribution' Trailer Offers Milla Jovovich, Monsters, 3D'Resident Evil: Retribution' Trailer Offers Milla Jovovich, Monsters, 3D

The full theatrical trailer for Resident Evil: Retribution has debuted online, and it promises exactly what you'd expect after four previous Resident Evil movies.

It's like ordering fast food in that sense.  You know it's going to contain Milla Jovovich beating the shit out of stuff, slow-motion, explosions, some nasty zombies, and assorted rampaging creatures.  Since the last installment, 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife, used 3D to comercially successful effect, you know going in that this trailer will conclude with a weapon flying out at you in the slowest motion.

Almost six months ago, the first teaser trailer for the sequel pulled an effective bait and switch, setting itself up as a slick Sony commercial before going all post-apocalyptic.  This full trailer tries something similar, something that recalls Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake.  But even if you were sitting in a theater and didn't know this was a Resident Evil trailer from the get-go, Jovovich herself is a giveaway.  We've just seen her being the badass action heroine for too many years to believe her as softly-lit homemaker.

The trailer below is via the film's official Facebook.

Writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson certainly seems to have expanded the scope since the first film, which took place pretty much entirely in a single underground location if I remember correctly.  This looks appropriately global and world-ending.  Anderson, the lovely Jovovich's real-life husband, kicked off the franchise then took a break from the franchise for the sequels Apocalypse and Extinction before returning for Afterlife.  For the fifth film, he's throwing in some new faces with series regulars.  Kevin Durand, Bingbing Li, and Johann Urb represent the former, with Jovovich, Oded Fehr, Sienna Guillory, Michelle Rodriguez, and Colin Salmon obviously in the latter camp.

It looks as though Screen Gems may very well have dropped that Re5ident Evil title gimmick.  Probably for the best.

Pick up your own Rogue 3D Eyewear to see stuff flying at you when Resident Evil: Retribution arrives in theaters on September 14th.

Here's the official synopsis:

The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.
