Pretty Cool 'Dredd' Poster Promises JudgmentPretty Cool 'Dredd' Poster Promises Judgment

Hey y'all, point your peepers at the first one-sheet for Dredd, the second attempt successfully adapt the 2000 A.D. character created Carlos Ezquerra and John Wagner all of thirty years ago.  This poster differentiates itself from the gaudy, overblown 1996 version starring Sylvester Stallone by going all kinds of minimalist, keeping Dredd in the shadows.

And that's cool.  The long-lived authoritarian Dredd of the comics is never seen without his helmet on, and apparently this movie will do him justice in that department.  Rather than having an inexplicably blue-eyed Stallone screaming about being the law, this leaner, meaner Dredd is played by Karl Urban, who will keep his face obscured by the Judge's signature mask for the duration.

The poster premiered at JoBlo today, along with two new images from the film.  You'll have to click over that way in order to see the pictures, and I suggest you do, because one shows Dredd shooting lawbreakers while another has our best look so far at Mega City One, Dredd's wretched futuristic stomping grounds.

Vantage Point director Pete Travis is at the helm of this Dredd resurrection, and the presence of that R rating on the poster indicates that, despite reports of some editorial issues months ago, there's a cut of Dredd in place.  It also indicates that this take on the character will be considerably more violent than its ill-fated predecessor.

Alex Garland, who wrote the novel The Beach and the screenplays for Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later and Sunshine, is the screenwriter and a producer on this film.  The cast is led by Urban, but also includes Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey.

Dredd judges in theaters on September 21st.
