Then there's also the giant money-piles to be built out of previous comic book movies on Blu-ray and DVD. In mid-May, we learned that director and writer Joss Whedon's The Avengers is set to hit DVD and extra features-packed Blu-ray on September 25th.
At the time, there was also a rumor that Marvel was planning a massive six-movie Blu-ray gift set that would include the full cinematic universe: both Iron Man movies, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. It sounded at least a little improbable, though, given that every movie up until The Avengers was distributed by Paramount Pictures prior to Disney buying up Marvel in toto. Considering the amounts of money to made, it's not terribly surprising that everyone came to a deal, as Amazon now has listed a ten-disc, six movie Marvel collector's set entitled "Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One: Avengers Assembled."
The list price on this bad boy is $219.00, so start head over to the local CoinStar if you don't already have most of these at home. There's no release date as of yet, but it seems likely to be a big Christmas gift, so expect it in October or November.
Here's a sampling of what to expect when the collection arrives:
- Marvel’s The Avengers (Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray)
- Captain America: The First Avenger (Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray)
- Thor (Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray)
- Iron Man 2 (Blu-ray)
- The Incredible Hulk (Blu-ray)
- Iron Man (Blu-ray)
- Bonus Disc – “The Phase One Archives” (Blu-ray)
- Collectible packaging with exclusive memorabilia from the Marvel Cinematic Universe
