And, like the film itself, it's in black and white. Burton, who hasn't released a black and white feature since Ed Wood in 1994, somehow convinced Disney to let him shoot this animated movie in the two-color format. One presumes the global gross in excess of a billion dollars on Alice in Wonderland helped him persuade any skeptics. Regardless, a wide release shot in black and white is always a happy occurrence, so huzzah.
The new poster recalls its predecessor, a teaser poster released back in February. That was followed by the first trailer, which ably communicated the film's happy morbidity and basic idea of a lonely suburban boy resurrecting his canine best friend and bringing about some unexpected craziness. John August, who in the past worked with Burton on Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is responsible for the screenplay here, working from a basic story by the director and Leonard Ripps. Back in 1984, before Burton made his feature debut with Pee-wee's Big Adventure, he directed a live-action Frankenweenie short film for Disney starring Shelley Duvall, Daniel Stern, and Sofia Coppola (!). The studio was so puzzled by the product, though, that Burton was basically let go as a result.
Now, though, he's blockbuster director Tim Burton, so he's getting a chance to revisit the material as he originally envisioned it: a stop-motion movie. With Charlie Tahan providing the voice of the young, suburban Victor Frankenstein, Burton's voice cast includes Catherine O'Hara, Martin Landau, Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Christopher Lee, and SpongeBob SquarePants himself, Tom Kenny.
Frankenweenie arrives in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on October 5th.
