Behind The Scenes Featurette on Ron Howard's Formula 1 Movie, 'Rush'Behind The Scenes Featurette on Ron Howard's Formula 1 Movie, 'Rush'

After spending a lot of time developing the crazily ambitious Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower across a movie trilogy and two limited-run television series to no avail at Universal, Ron Howard jumped right into directing Rush.  Now that production has wrapped, a new behind-the-scenes video featurette clocking in at just under four-minutes shows just what Howard's been up to on his Formula 1 racing drama.

The film chronicles the real life friendship and rivalry between racers James Hunt and Niki Lauda, particularly the 1976 season, in which the hard-living, passionate Hunt went up against straightlaced, technically-minded Lauda just weeks after the latter endured a traumatic racetrack accident.

This featurette includes lots of historical and behind-the-scenes footage, along with Ron Howard discussing his hope that the movie captures the excitement and drama of Formula 1, a racing sport not terribly well-known here in the States.  Producer Andrew Eaton also shows up, as does "Precision Driver Co-Ordinator" Niki Faulkner.  A big draw here, though, are Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl, who discuss playing Hunt and Landa, respectively.

Obviously, the video was produced for the BBC, but the embed above showed up at The Playlist.

Throughout the production of Rush, Howard's official Twitter was a treasure trove of on-set images and tidbits, which you can review here, @RealRonHoward.  After dipping his toe back into the world of broad comedy with last year's The Dilemma, the director is once again working from a screenplay by Peter Morgan, who wrote Frost/Nixon, as well as The Queen, The Damned United, and The Last King of Scotland.

Hemsworth is currently swinging Mjolnir as Thor in the biggest movie on the planet, The Avengers, and this Friday, he tosses hatchets as the Huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman.  Brühl, meanwhile, is probably best known to American audiences for his scarily effective work as Fredrick Zoller in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.  The two stars are joined here by Olivia Wilde, Natalie Dormer, and Christian McKay.

Rush does not yet have a release date, but it's pretty much guaranteed for some point in 2013.
