Ensemble Drama '96 Minutes' Arrives on DVD May 29thEnsemble Drama '96 Minutes' Arrives on DVD May 29th

Okay, let's take a momentary break from movies about men dressing up as bats to fight crime, superheroes teaming up to stop an alien invasion, and human beings searching for our beginning and finding our end.  It'll only be a quick break, I promise.  Instead, we're going to focus here on 96 Minutes, a drama inspired by real-life events that's set for release on DVD next Tuesday, May 29th.

The film unfolds in real-time and follows four disparate individuals whose lives seem destined never to interconnect.  A series of coincidences and seemingly random actions, however, cause these four characters into a collision, as a carjacking complicates the lives of everyone involved and sheds light on the subtle ways in which they were already interconnected.

The film is both written and directed by Aimee Lagos, making her directorial debut with the drama that is at once sprawling and intimate.  Her first film played at last year's SXSW Film Festival and won prizes at the Boston Film Festival for Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Film.

Here's the official synopsis:

96 MINUTES is the spellbinding story of a carjacking and four kids caught in the hair-raising chaos of one night.  The story builds to a thrilling climax as it intercuts between the car and the beginning of that day, following the separate stories of each kid – where they come from, who they are, and how they all ended up in one car on this fateful night. With incredible performances by a young cast, this riveting moral tale touches on the issues of race, class, friendship and our connections to our past. Not all of them are innocent, not all of them survive, but in these 96 minutes the choices they each make will change their lives forever.

The DVD contains an insightful commentary from Lagos and David Oyelowo, an actor you'll doubtless recognize from Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Red Tails.  Oyelowo is but one member of an ensemble cast that includes the likes of Brittany Snow, Sylvia Jeffries, Christian Serratos, Justin Martin, Jamila Thompson, Evan Ross, Sharon Morris, Markice Moore, and Adam Trahan.
