Mads Mikkelsen In Talks to Menace 'Thor 2'Mads Mikkelsen In Talks to Menace 'Thor 2'

With The Avengers, Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, has now served as the principal antagonist for two Marvel movies, so we couldn't expect that he'd be shouldering the villainous burden alone for a third time.  Thor 2 is set to be Marvel Studios' second post-Avengers movie, and it looks the studio and director Alan Taylor have found an actor to play a new villain, as a familiar bad guy is in talks to join the cosmic party.

Marvel and Disney have yet to comment on any new Thor sequel casting, but according to Variety, Mads Mikkelsen is in negotiations to join the film as a villain.  There's no word on just who Mikkelsen will play, assuming his negotiations go smoothly.  We do know, however, that despite the addition of at least one new mysterious bad guy, Hiddleston's Loki still plays, "a big part as an antagonist."

Mikkelsen is probably best known to American audiences as the blood-weeping baddie Le Chiffre in the 2006 Bond movie Casino Royale.  The Danish actor has done strong work in a whole lot of movies, though, including Nicols Winding-Refn's second Pusher film and Valhalla Rising.  He also played a supporting role in the 2010 Clash of the Titans remake and last year's 3D The Three Musketeers.

When/if his negotiations pan out, Mikkelsen will join a cast that includes many an actor returning from Thor, led by Chris Hemsworth as the titular thunder god, along with Natalie Portman, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Ray Stevenson, Jaimie Alexander, Tadanobu Asano, and Josh Dallas.

The sequel is set to enter production later this summer under the director of Alan Taylor, a veteran of HBO series Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, and even AMC's Mad Men.  Taylor took over on the film after director Patty Jenkins amicably parted ways with Marvel Studios due to the oft-cited creative differences.  Kenneth Branagh, who directed the first film, opted not to return for another go-round.  Don Payne, one of five credited writers on Thor, was initially set to write the sequel, but Saving Private Ryan's Robert Rodat took over for revisions.

Thor 2 is set for November 15, 2013, well after Iron Man 3 in May of 2013.
