New 'Brave' Clip: A Tale of Manly Terror Well ToldNew 'Brave' Clip: A Tale of Manly Terror Well Told

With almost a month to the day until Brave arrives in theaters, you can expect to spend the next thirty-odd days inundated with new promotional material for Pixar's latest, the animation powerhouse's first non-sequel since Up back in 2009.  A new clip, for example, promotes the Disney release with aplomb, hinting at the still-mysterious story whilst sticking to character, character, character.

First and foremost among the characters is Princess Merida, and the punctuation mark at the end of the clip below comes as her mother chastises her, reinforcing the dynamic between mother and daughter familiar from previous promotional bits.  In the brief exchange, we see Merida's discomfort with her role as a princess and they way she bristles at her ma's attempts to pin down her wild nature.

Through her faux-exasperation, we can also see how she relishes her father's tale of losing his leg.  We know that a bear or bears become crucially important in Merida's quest, so the story being told by King Fergus is doubtless of importance later in the film.

It's a proven truism – a scientific fact, an indisputably axiomatic law of the universe – that putting Billy Connolly in any movie makes that movie better.  This truth obviously extends to Connolly's voice, and it sounds as though he's having a good time voicing the Scottish king in Pixar's old-fashioned adventure.

The vastly underrated Kelly Macdonald brings her own Scottish brogue to Merida, the first female protagonist after a dozen films led by animated dudes of various species and types.  Macdonald, a versatile actress who has shown up in No Country for Old Men, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and Trainspotting, as well as the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, leads a small but most impressive vocal cast.  In addition to Connolly, that cast includes Emma Thompson as the queen, Craig Ferguson, Kevin McKidd, and Robbie Coltrane as three bumbling lords, and John Ratzenberger in his standard Pixar cameo.

Brave hits theaters in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on June 22nd.
