Only audiences seeing the second Men in Black sequel in IMAX 3D will get to see the preview. Sony announced the preview on the official The Amazing Spider-Man facebook page. Starting with special midnight screenings this Wednesday, any and all IMAX 3D showings will be preceded by the exclusive sneak peek at Spider-Man's new cinematic origin story.
It's a canny move by Sony, one that could benefit both of these two big summer tentpoles, both of which were shot in three dimensions rather than post-converted.
Five years ago, Warner Bros. set a precedent for this with the six-minute The Dark Knight prologue attached to IMAX exhibitions of I Am Legend, also starring Will Smith. Working with Paramount, the WB repeated the move for The Dark Knight Rises, including a prologue for the next Batman movie with 70mm IMAX screenings of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. It seems to proven mutually beneficial for both the previewed films and the features in the past, so Sony's betting it will again.
Men in Black 3 reunites director Barry Sonnenfeld with stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, and they're joined by franchise newcomer Josh Brolin playing a younger version of Jones's Agent K character. The film is set to hit theaters this Friday, May 25th.
The Amazing Spider-Man, meanwhile, casts Andrew Garfield as the new Peter Parker and Emma Stone as his lady love Gwen Stacy. The reboot is directed by (500) Days of Summer helmer Marc Webb and arrives at a theater near you on July 3rd.
Also, r3load.net recreated the intro the 1967 animated Spider-Man series using snippets from The Amazing Spider-Man, and it's a pretty good time, so give it a watch:
