While Marvel Studios and Disney are doubtless frolicking in giant money-piles, they're also preparing to create even bigger money piles with the home-video versions, and a poster on the Blu-ray.com forums has kindly provided some unofficial information on the discs, starting with that September street date.
Of greater interest to the legions of The Avengers fans, though, are the special features that will be included on the 2D and 3D Blu-ray sets. You can see a good-sized listing below, one that includes commentary by writer-director Whedon, a new Marvel One-Shot short film, and a whole mess of deleted and extended scenes.
We know that Whedon's first cut of the film was closer to three hours, so it's no surprise that such scenes will be included, particularly some material with Chris Evans as Steve Rogers acclimating to the modern world. What is surprising is the inclusion of both an alternate opening and ending, both featuring Cobie Smulders as SHIELD Agent Maria Hill. There's also more material between Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner and Harry Dean Stanton's deadpan security guy.
While all that you see listed below is included on the Blu-ray, note that the DVD contains only the Whedon commentary and a featurette.

There are also some unofficial covers for the different home entertainment releases floating about online at the moment, but it seems Disney isn't too pleased about those. So, in deference to the House of Mickey, you won't find those here. Because you deserve something, though, enjoy the below image, an amusing fruit of the internet that imagines The Avengers as seen through the pun-and-sunglasses-dependent lens of CSI: Miami.
