The romantic drama, which has previously been referred to by the tentative title The Burial, will, in fact, be called To The Wonder.  That's based on an update at Film Ratings, where it's also been revealed that the newly-titled To The Wonder is rated R on account of "some sexuality/nudity."  The site also pegs the film as a 2012 release, but as it doesn't yet have a distributor, that's not concrete by any means.

Since Malick's next has a rating, that means the director, who often spends months and years fine-tuning his projects in editing, has a cut that's locked.  It may simply be wishful thinking, but with the implicit promise of an actual movie, it makes sense that To The Wonder will be shopped to potential domestic and international distributors over the next week and a half or so at Cannes.  From there, it'd make sense if the distributor positioned the film for an awards season release, since, you know, it's a Terrence Malick movie.  Again, wishful thinking.

Affleck and McAdams star in the film, with support from a cast that includes Rachel Weisz, Javier Bardem, Olga Kurylenko, Barry Pepper, Michael Sheen, Amanda Peet, and Jessica Chastain.  What little we know about the picture was revealed last year, when the Los Angeles Times dropped the first synopsis, reading as follows:

"…a philanderer (Affleck) who, feeling at loose ends, travels to Paris, where he enters a hot-and-heavy affair with a European woman (Olga Kurylenko). Said Lothario returns home to Oklahoma, where he marries the European woman (in part for visa reasons). When the relationship founders, he rekindles a romance with a hometown girl (Rachel McAdams) with whom he’s had a long history."

To The Wonder represents on entry in a remarkably prolific period for a director who released five films over a 38-year period, with a two-decade break between Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line.  The Badlands director got back in the game last year with The Tree of Life, and he's about two shoot two films back-to-back, both of them starring Christian Bale.

The first was formerly titled Lawless before that title went to John Hillcoat's new movie, itself formerly titled The Wettest Country in the World.  That Malick joint stars Bale, Ryan Golsing, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, and Haley Bennett.  After he films that one, Malick moves on to Knight of Cups, again starring Bale and Blanchett, along with Isabel Lucas.  Beyond that, we don't know much about either movie.
