Games like Toy Soldiers show a genre in rude health.
It's tempting to call the closure of Ensemble Studios in 2009 the final nail in the console strategy game's coffin. The developer's swansong, Halo Wars, was a project beyond the wildest dreams of beardy Xbox 360 owners, a fully-fledged RTS spin-off from the minds behind the billion-dollar Age of Empires series. Sure, the game's units and fiction were the property of a first-person shooter, but there's a hidden logic: Halo began life as an RTS on Mac, making Ensemble's effort something of a return-to-roots. If any title could secure the genre's future on console, advocates told one another, it was this.
