Bathroom Etiquette in the First Poster for Judd Apatow's 'This Is 40' Bathroom Etiquette in the First Poster for Judd Apatow's 'This Is 40'

Last month, Universal Pictures released the very first trailer for This Is 40, the fourth feature from writer-director-producorial emperor Judd Apatow.  Today, the studio has followed up the trailer with the film's domestic poster.  "Domestic" is a key word in another respect, since the "sort of sequel" spinning off from 2007's Knocked Up follows married couple Pete and Debbie into their forties, and this poster is all about the mundane oddness of domesticity.

In Knocked Up, we saw plenty of Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann as Pete and Debbie interacting in their bathroom, that marital DMZ.  This one sheet places the couple back in that familiar setting as Debbie brushes her teeth and Pete sits on the toilet with the door wide open.  It's an image that effectively conveys the idea behind this comedic drama, and Pete's iPad gets the funny placement award.

The poster debuted at Screen Crush today, and it's here only thanks to their good graces, so click that way if you're so inclined.

These two characters, along with their daughters played by Maude Apatow and Iris Apatow, were used very effectively in Knocked Up and audiences responded strongly, so it'll be interesting to see how their midlife struggles play as the central storyline this spin-off.

Apatow, billed on the poster as the producer of Bridesmaids (remember a year ago when nobody was sure that one was going to work?), has stacked the supporting cast with funny folks, as if to ensure that Rudd and Mann wouldn't have to shoulder the comedic burden all on their own.  Knocked Up alums Jason Segel and Charlene Yi show up in the film, along with proven talents like John Lithgow, Melissa McCarthy, Chris O'Dowd, Albert Brooks, Lena Dunham, and even Megan Fox.

This Is 40 arrives on December 21st.
