'Neighborhood Watch' Gets a New Title and a Foul-Mouthed Red Band Trailer'Neighborhood Watch' Gets a New Title and a Foul-Mouthed Red Band Trailer

The summer comedy formerly known as Neighborhood Watch not only has a new title today, but 20th Century Fox has also released a red-band trailer that provides the best indication of just what The Watch is all about.

The film's plot – a quartet of ineffectual suburban dads facing an alien invasion – and the presence of Ben Stiller may have suggested that the film would be a four-quadrant, family-friendly affair, but this trailer is chock full of bad language and dirty talk from the likes of Stiller, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade, and Vince Vaughn.

Before the trailer hit today, Drew McWeeny's Motion/Captured blog at HifFix gave a heads up about the title change to The Watch.  20th Century Fox made the call to switch up the title based on the current connotation of the phrase neighborhood watch with George Zimmerman and the Florida shooting of Trayvon Martin.  In selling a happily ridiculous comedy, Fox naturally doesn't want audiences thinking of such a thoroughly unfunny matter.

So now we have The Watch We've previously seen a teaser trailer, but it didn't give a sense that this would be a particularly dirty comedy.  Based on the red band trailer, which debuted at IGN, the movie is unabashedly R-rated, with the central characters seemingly viewing everything through a lens of amusingly warped sexuality.

Costco + comparing alien blood to semen at length + an exploding cow = comedy gold.  Though he's the least recognizable to American audiences, Richard Ayoade is the cast's secret weapon.  Fans of British comedy know him for his wonderful work as Moss on The IT Crowd and Saboo on The Mighty Boosh, and last year, he made his debut as a writer-director with the underseen Submarine.  Also, Ayoade directed the My Dinner With Andre-inspired episode of Community last season, so yeah, he's great.

In addition to Ayaode, Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller, and Vince Vaughn, the cast includes Rosemarie DeWitt, Will Forte, Billy Crudup, Nicholas Braun, Jorma Taccone, and Doug Jones.

Akiva Schaffer, who directed Hot Rod and many a Saturday Night Live digital short with his Lonely Island cohorts, makes his sophomore feature here, and it looks like he's been allowed to let loose on a script by Jared Stern and reliably funny dudes Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

The Watch arrives in theaters nationwide July 27th.
