'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Featurette Positions Abe as a Superhero'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Featurette Positions Abe as a Superhero

This morning we saw a featurette for Dark Shadows, Tim Burton's new film penned by mashup novelist-turned-screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith.  Now, let's make it a twofer with a brand new featurette for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, based on Grahame-Smith's second novel.  The two-minute promotional piece includes lots of new footage of star Benjamin Walker spinning his ax like a bat out of hell, interspersed with a bull session between Grahame-Smith, producer Burton, and director Timur Bekmambetov.

The new footage consists almost exclusively of action and no shortage of speed ramps.  The three creative figures, meanwhile, pitch their film as a superhero movie, with the vampire hunting 16th American President as its own avenger.  Bekmambetov refers to their version of Lincoln as a "Nineteenth Century Batman," and Grahame-Smith says Abe's tenchcoat is like a cape, his stovepipe hat is like a mask, and his trusty ax is like a utility belt.

In a summer that includes The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises, using superheroics to contextualize your movie can't be too bad a business decision.

Watch the featurette below or clickety-click your way over to Apple for the high definition version.

Grahame-Smith made his name with the bestseller Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a bestseller that has yet to get its own film adaptation, despite numerous attempts by Lionsgate.  He contributed to the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter screenplay, along with executive producer Simon Kinberg, who's currently at work on the X-Men: First Class sequel.

Benjamin Walker stars the titular President/slayer of vampires, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays the Mary Todd to his Abraham, though we've yet to really see her in any trailers or what have you.  The supporting cast includes Rufus Sewell, Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Alan Tudyk, Robin McLeavy, Marton Csokas, and Jimmi Simpson.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter arrives in theaters on June 22nd.
