It seems that a lot of people are sueing everyone and their mother these days. Usually we've been seeing the big gaming companies suing the small time guys, mainly Bethesda. This time, things are different. Auther John L. Beiswinger, research engineer and writer, is suing Ubisoft. Why? He claims that the Assassin's Creed franchise completely copies his book Link. Link apparently has an animus, has biblical tones in it, and makes references to Christ and God.
The lawsuit for the case gives examples of the “Link” and “bio-synchronizer” which are both items used in a similar way as the Animus.
“George,” asked LaShauna, “what does your 9 device do - in simple language?” “Okay, in simple language, instead of one percept each time we trigger a cell, or a series of percepts in stroboscopic fashion when we trigger a pulse every so many seconds . . .” “. . . we’ll experience a full memory in perfect synchronization with the brain,” finished Anna.
You can read more about in the lawsuit here: Assassin's Creed Lawsuit
Anyways, Beiswinger wants $1.05 million (for something) and $5.25 million in damages as well as blocking Assassin's Creed III and future Assassin's Creed products from being released. I'm hoping that this at least gets delayed past the Assassin's Creed III release date. I've already pre-ordered and some Debbie downer is not going to ruin the game for me. Maybe we should start a petition. Everyone's doing it!
What really puzzles me is that this guy's book was out ages ago, about 8 years. Assassin's Creed has been out since 2007 and this guy is just now realizing that the game exists? I'm sorry but you're really late to the proverbial game Mr. Beiswinger.
Maybe Nintendo will pull a Bethesda and sue Beiswinger for using "Link" as the title of his book.
