The Retake Mass Effect 3 campaign has been asked to stop raising money for Child's Play.
That sounds a little crazy, and most people are going to take it the wrong way, but I'm here to explain. Contrary to popular belief, the guys at Penny Arcade didn't block donations just because they don't think the ending should be changed, even though wanting people to rewrite the ending of a video game that they didn't like would set a dangerous precedent and is completely stupid (I'm editorializing a bit here.)
In fact, there was a misconception that lead to donators thinking they were actually paying money to have a new ending made. In a statement released by Jerry Holkins (Tycho from Penny Arcade) he related the following information.
"We were dealing with a lot of very confused people, more every day, and that told us we had a problem," he said. "Apparently some of the people giving to the cause seemed to think that they were paying for a new ending to Mass Effect." He went on to say that they received tons of emails asking exactly how much they needed to raise to buy the new ending.
Child's Play has gone on to add a new rule to the charity guidelines. "Child's Play cannot be a tool to draw attention to a cause. Child's Play must be the cause."
While it is lame that a misunderstanding has led to the cause not being able to raise more money for charity, at least it should stop a situation where people think they are literally paying for a new ending and wanting their money back. What do you think about the Retake Mass Effect 3 campaign?
