Beamdog, the studio behind the upcoming Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, is interested in eventually giving the beloved BioWare RPG series its long-awaited third entry, should circumstances allow.
"Baldur's Gate 3 has been our long term goal," the studio's Cameron Tofer told GameSpy. "We have a lot of things to put in place before such a project can be launched. So currently there is no such project but that's the one we want to do."
If the opportunity does arise for Beamdog to tackle Baldur's Gate 3, Tofer says crowd-funding may be the best option.
"We're totally thinking Kickstarter. It just makes so much sense and solves so many problems. I think what Brian [Fargo] is doing with Wasteland is very interesting," he said, referencing the success of inXile's ongoing Wasteland 2 fundraiser.
For the moment, though, Beamdog is focused on ensuring that the Enhanced Editions of the first two games succeed, as their success will help prove the commercial viability of a straight sequel.
So what exactly will be "enhanced" about them? An HD facelift is a given, but Tofer said we can expect several more substantial upgrades when the game launches later this summer.
"We've been adding side stories, stories to tie things together, unfinished stories. As far as new types of abilities, we have more announcements coming."
For the moment, the Enhanced Editions have only been confirmed for release on the PC, but a tease from Beamdog head Trent Oster implied that more platform announcements are on the way.
