'Netflix' Dropping Movies and Going TV Shows 'NetTV'

Netflix is now primarily an Internet streaming service for television shows, not feature films which negates the "FLIX" part of it's name.

TV series now account for more than half of all Netflix viewing. That helps to explain why this Wednesday — the long-awaited moment when motion picture classics like “Scarface” and newer hits like “Toy Story 3” will vanish from the streaming service.

The vanishing films are from Starz. Its three-and-a-half-year-old deal helped Netflix persuade millions of people to sign up for Internet streaming, hastening the company’s leap to digital distribution from physical DVDs.

Netflix could replenish some of the vanishing Starz films by buying them separately. But for now, its rights to “Toy Story 3,” “Tron,” “Tangled,” “A Christmas Carol” and other films are drying up. Some TV series from Starz are vanishing too, including “Party Down” and “Spartacus”.

Netflix declined to comment on exactly what proportion of total viewing that TV episodes make up, but its executives put the number at 50 to 60 percent last fall. They feel the percentages indicate a shift by viewers toward TV Shows instead of films. They don't account for the possibility that the shift could be related to the fact their movie selection isn't very good.

I don't know about most subscribers, but I want to watch movies, good ones, not old rubbish from the past. I also think part of the reason Netflix has high TV Show viewing is becuase people are paying for the streaming service and movie choices are limited, so TV Shows are the only thing left to watch. This doesn't mean people would rather watch TV Shows, even if it is cool to watch an entire series with out waiting a week between episodes.

Here's a thought drop the streaming service and watch TV on TV. The next thing you know they will start adding commericials like HULU and call it a way to keep the service cheaper.
