At forty-five he was married with two children, and he had not spent a night completely alone quite some time. He was more than eager to have a chance to sprawl out on the couch and command the remote. He had stocked up on all the junk food his wife looked down on so that he could feast on it guilt free. Beside the couch he had stocked a cooler with a few of his favorite beers. His intention was not to have to move once the movie started. He laid back across the couch and smiled with a contented sigh. He adored his family, but a night alone was exactly what he had been craving. He turned on the television and started one of his favorite horror movies. It was too gory for his wife’s tastes, and despite his assertion that blood spatter was a form of art, he was uncomfortable letting his children watch it. He had a bag of popcorn at his side and a pillow propped beneath his head. He popped open a bottle of beer and took a long swig as the opening credits began. He had spent the extra cash on a state of the art surround sound system, so when the first slasher scene arrived, he heard every scream and thrash of the knife. Just as the killer was creeping through the darkened kitchen in the movie, a loud crash of thunder echoed through Gerald’s home. He jumped at the sound, and nearly spilled his beer and popcorn. He was not expecting bad weather. He sat up enough to glance out the window. Sheets of rain were pouring against the glass. With a shrug he settled back against the pillow and continued to enjoy his movie. As he crunched on his popcorn and swigged his beer, the storm outside began to rage. Its rumbling thunder and flashing lightly made a great addition to the dramatic music that played throughout the movie. As the movie grew more tense he sat forward on the couch. He knew exactly what would happen, and yet he still found it quite suspenseful. Even though the woman in the movie knew better than to head down into that dark basement, she was brave enough to do it. Little did she know that every step she took down the stairs, the killer was stepping down right behind her. Gerald shoved a handful of popcorn in his mouth and in the same moment, the lights in the house flickered and threatened to give out. “No!” He howled at the electricity. “Not tonight.” He demanded as he stood from the couch and glared at the light fixtures. “It’s just a storm, don’t fail me now!” As if they understood his words, the lights
