While Lois advises Clark on how to maintain a low profile, a new hero, Booster Gold, travels from the future to present-day Metropolis to become a media darling as a superhero. However, one of his rescues goes wrong, causing an alien scarab-weapon to attach itself to a teenage boy, growing into a battlesuit and transforming him into the Blue Beetle.
Full Recap (Spoilers)
On the streets of Metropolis, Lois and Clark are heading to work, and Clark complains about the new disguise of glasses that Lois has created for him to protect his identity. He worries that he has to show himself as the Blur soon or lose the public's trust, but Lois assures him that the public hasn't forgotten him, and the mayor has offered the Blur the key to the city. They notice a teenager nearby acting awkwardly, and Clark admits that he was like that as a teenager. He tells Lois to focus on the new job opening, and reluctantly lets her put the glasses on him.
The teenager, Jaime Reyes, chases after his friends and trips as he crosses the street. As a SUV approaches him, Clark hears it and prepares to go to the rescue, but another hero arrives to use a force field to save Jaime. The blue-and-gold clad figure smiles for the cameras and introduces himself as Booster Gold, the greatest hero that no one has heard of... until now. Jaime goes past the SUV and notices that it was transporting a canister that has broken open in the crash. He's unaware that the item being transported, a blue jewel scarab, is moving on his own and crawling into his backpack. Meanwhile, Booster walks past Clark, compliments him on his glasses as if he knows what they're hiding, and flies away.
At the Planet, Clark worries about the new hero and believes that he has to find out more about him. Lois warns that he's making more out of it then he needs to and Clark reluctantly agrees. They're interrupted when they find the reporters gathered at Clark's desk, where Booster is there to talk to Lois. He brushes past Clark and suggests that Lois interview him so she can get her promotion. Lois is surprised that he knows about her promotion, and tells Booster that she isn't interested. Booster leaves for a signing, and Cat Grant arrives too late to meet him. She admits to Lois that she admires Booster because he reveals his face to the public and can serve for an inspiration. Cat also believes that she can use the interview to get the promotion that Lois is applying for. Once she leaves, Lois tells Clark to focus on improving his image as a klutz so they can get the Blur back out in the public eye.
Jaime is at the curb with his friends when he accidentally spills pop on himself. A girl, Dora, comes over to console him and give him her own pop, but it explodes as well. Lois, passing nearby, sees the incident. As Jaime walks by, Lois points out that he has a "kick me" sign on his back. She tells Jaime to stand up for himself and walk with some confidence, and go over and get mad at the other students. Lois tries to inspire him without success, and watches as he simply walks away. Jaime enters an alleyway, clutching at his back. The scarab breaks climbs out of his backpack and attaches itself to his neck.
Booster conducts a full-scale media blitz, advertising his 800 number. Clark is watching it at his office as Lois arrives and says he can't send her roses because it contradicts his new image. They realize that Booster sent the flowers, and Lois wonder if Clark is jealous of Booster for arriving at every accident and crime in the last 24 hours. Clark insists that he isn't, and notes that Booster doesn't arrive to stop the accident, but protects people at the last second and pose for photo-ops. They catch a press statement about Ted Kord, head of Kord industries, who is talking about a missing piece of equipment. Clark explains that Kord secretly deals with disarming recovered superweapons and heads out to find the missing tech, while Lois resolves to look into Booster's background.
Cat goes to see Booster at an autograph signing and expresses her admiration, and asks to interview him. He says that he wants Lois or no one, but Cat insists that she can get him the publicity he wants. Booster gets a call from his automated personal assistant, Skeets, saying that Lois is approaching. Booster says he should have come back long ago, and goes to greet her. Lois insists that the Blur is the hero of Metropolis. He warns her that the perception is the reality and he is the one who is inspiring the people. Lois doesn't believe it, and Booster tells her that he came there to replace the Blur. Cat overhears the entire thing and quickly leaves. Meanwhile, Skeets warns that it may not be a good idea to try and replace Clark Kent, but Booster says it's his last chance to make something of himself by grabbing Clark's place in history.
That night, Cat encounters Lois at the Planet and insists that she has first dibs on Booster. Lois insists that she doesn't want to have anything to do with Cat or Booster, and that real heroes don't work for a paycheck or pose for photo-ops. Cat doesn't believe it and leaves, carrying a Booster Gold t-shirt.
Clark arrives to talk to Kord as he organizes his recovery efforts, and asks why he is there in person. When Clark asks him about how powerful the missing weapon is, Kord wonders how he knows that it's a weapon and Clark starts stammering and feigning illness. As he goes, Kord gets a call from Booster and makes sure that he can be discrete in recovering the weapon. Clark listens in with his super-hearing and listens as Booster negotiates to have Kord get him the key to Metropolis. Kord agrees and says he'll do whatever it takes to get the scarab back. Clark then superspeeds through and grabs the schematics on the scarab that are lying on a table. As he stops to read them, he discovers that Lois is creating billboards to promote the Blur.
As Booster rehearses his acceptance speech for the key, Jaime approaches him for help. The new hero isn't interested in helping and sends him on his way. He then talks to his team of cheerleaders and asks which one wants to hand him the key, and Cat steps forward.
Behind the stage, Jaime screams in agony as he is transformed into a blue armored figure and sets out to destroy.
When Lois returns, Clark confronts her about her new billboards and says they need to worry about the scarab. It's an extraterrestrial piece of technology that bonded with Dan Garrett, one of Kord's scientists. Garrett killed three people and died when they removed the scarab. Lois admits that the Blur can't go public, but wishes they could. Lois receives a call from Booster and Clark takes the call. Clark wants to talk and superspeeds to confront him. He insists that Booster is putting Clark's vigilante friends at risk, and notices that Booster is wearing a Legion Ring. Booster claims that the Legionnaires are friends, and Clark realizes that he stole the ring. The new hero admits that he's from the future, and is using the historical information contained on his data droid, Skeets, to anticipate accidents before they happen. Skeets has no record of Kord's scarab, and Booster explains that according to the historical records, whoever gets the key to the city will be declared Metropolis' hero. He invites Clark to don the suit and reveal himself, but Clark says a hero is someone who brings out the best in people. Booster is unimpressed and enters the studio to accept the key.
Booster prepares to perform the ceremony with Cat at his side. The scarab battle suit marches in and opens fire, while Jaime is trapped inside, unable to stop it. Cat sees Booster cowering in fear, while the "hero" checks with Skeets, who has no record of the attacker. Skeets warns that Clark was right and they've altered history. The scarab armor prepares to fire on Cat, and Skeets tells Booster that he has to act or leave.
Clark hears the commotion and runs to a nearby phone booth to don the Blur's uniform. Superspeeding into the studio, he stops the energy blast before it can hit her, and she realizes that it's the Blur who has saved her. Booster opens fire on the scarab armor, knocking it back, but Jaime is still unable to control the armor. It grabs Booster and opens the helmet, revealing Jaime's face. Jaime begs for help and Booster apologizes, admitting that he's not a hero. He tells Jaime to fight the armor's influence and have faith in who he is and what he can be. Jaime concentrates and takes control of the armor, causing it to retract into the scarab on his back. Jaime embraces Booster, thanking him for his belief in him, and Booster looks up to see Clark watching the entire exchange.
Later, Clark meets with Booster and admits that he surprised him. Booster apologizes for screwing up for trying to take Clark's place in history. He finally admits that he knew it would blow up eventually like it always does, and that in the future he was a sports star who started betting on his own games and then throwing them. Clark asks if he still feels it was easier to lose than win, and Booster explains that he was caught in the future and lost everything. He stole the Legion ring, Skeets, and his power suit, came to the 21st century, and made the same mistakes. Clark notes that Booster believed everything he said to Jaime, and suggests that he stay to watch over Jaime after Kord removes the scarab. Booster considers and then tells Clark to find a different name; something strong, something simple, something that starts with an S... something super. Clark promises to consider it, and Booster gives him one of his fan club t-shirts.
Lois and Kord meet with Jaime, and they are surprised and pleased that Jaime was able to control the scarab. Jaime wants to keep the scarab and learn how to use it to become a real hero. Booster comes over and offers to let Lois interview Jaime, the real hero.
Later at the Planet, Cat congratulates Lois on getting her promotion and offers her Blur cookies as an apology. Lois tells her that the secret to being a great reporter is for Cat to do it her way. She notes that Cat has a box of goods, and Cat explains that she's moving into the basement. Clark arrives and Lois introduces him to his new desk buddy.
At the farm, Clark admits that after seeing Booster hide all of his insecurities, he thinks he can hide himself. He worries that people will wonder why she's marrying the new Clark Kent. Lois assures him that they can make it work and kisses him.
