Channing Tatum In Talks for Roland Emmerich's 'White House Down'Channing Tatum In Talks for Roland Emmerich's 'White House Down'

It's a presidential election year, so the goings-on at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are particularly prominent in the cultural consciousness.  One man with the White House on his mind is director Roland Emmerich, as he's directing the actioner White House Down, an action-thriller that pits a lone Secret Service Agent against a paramilitary force in a Die Hard-style scenario.  Emmerich has apparently found the man to play that agent, as Channing Tatum is now in talks to star.

To say that Tatum's been having a good year would be an understatement.  After a critically applauded turn in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire, he cemented his status as a bankable romantic lead with The Vow, and earned nigh-universal enthusiasm for his first comedic role alongside Jonah Hill in the hit 21 Jump Street.  This summer, he reunites with Soderbergh as the lead in Magic Mike and briefly reprises his role as Duke in G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

He's currently at work on Soderbergh's The Bitter Pill and has been connected to a number of high profile projects, including Bennett Miller's Moneyball follow-up Foxcatcher and The Wachowski's mysterious Jupiter Ascending.  As a producer, he's also developing a Peter Pan film and the 21 Jump Street sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, if the negotiations for White House Down pan out, he'll play a Secret Service Agent and single father who, hopelessly outgunned, must save the president when a paramilitary force lays siege to the White House.  Just from that basic description, this is obviously designed as a crowd-pleasing action blockbuster, which is exactly what you'd expect from the director of such films as Independence Day, 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla, and The Patriot.

Sony Pictures is exceedingly keen on the project, with a screenplay by Zodiac and The Amazing Spider-Man scripter James Vanderbilt.  The studio is planning a summer start to production for a tentative November 1, 2013 release date.

Tatum's producing partner at Iron Horse Productions, Reid Carolin, will join the film as an executive producer, with Vanderbilt, Laeta Kalogridis, Harald Kloser, and Bradley Fischer producing, as well.
