While Crystal Dynamics wowed people at last year's E3 by showing off the first gameplay glimpse of their upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, it seems like fans will have to wait a bit longer, as the developer has confirmed that the game will miss its projected fall release and instead, be moved to the first quarter of 2013.

Darrell Gallagher, Crystal Dynamics' studio head posted the following message on the official Eidos forums.

When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about. The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers. The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can't wait to share it with you.

Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have tp decided to move the game's release date by a few months, from Fall 2012 to the first quarter of 2013.

Aside from this, Gallagher also shared that they're doing things that are "completely new" to the Tomb Raider franchise and that the added development time will polish it " to a level you (fans) deserve."

Fans showed an admirable amount of restraint in their response on the forums, with many suggesting that the company release more information at E3 to placate everyone waiting for the game. The company responded that it would be giving out more information about the game in upcoming updates.

While this is certainly bad news, this could benefit the game both ways. Aside from the added polish and development time, the game's new release date also means it won't be lost amidst this year's big fall releases.

Do you think Crystal Dynamics will reinvigorate the franchise or should the Tomb Raider license remain buried?
