We live in a world where spending real money to buy some fake trash in video games is not only commonplace, it's becoming the norm for many games. Everything from buying coins or extra turns on your iOS games to buying some silly cosmetic items in any number of MMO games is something you face everyday. In fact, many companies have found that they make more money offering the game for free and selling little extras than if they just sold the game directly.
But how often have you been able to use fake, in-game currency to buy something that exists in the real world?
If you say 'never' I'm guessing that's probably pretty close. Can anyone name any time this has happened? Well Eve Online developer CCP is setting a precedent here, then. They've struck a deal with Nvidia to allow players to use their in-game currency, known as PLEX, to purchase GeForce 560 GTX graphics cards. For those among you who don't follow the pricing of computer components, those cards are about $200 retail.
For now, it's on a trial run. There are 100 cards available, and they are limited to one per account. If it works out and people seem to like it, it's likely to become a more regular thing.
So, that sounds pretty awesome. I tried to play Eve once ages ago and couldn't wrap my mind around it. Anyone else interested in giving it a try now?
