Assassin's Creed 3: New Setting, New Character Means It's Back to Basics

At this year’s GDC, Alex Hutchinson – Creative Director on Assassin’s Creed 3 – talked briefly on the team’s vision for the franchise’s third entry.

During Mr. Hutchinson’s presentation at GDC, he opted to speak on Assassin’s Creed 3, its development, and how previous iterations into the franchise have given them valuable insight in regards to what gamers want.

"I think one of the joys of having a new character and a new universe is that we can strip it back and we can go back to basics," he said.

This goes line-in-line with what he has to say next, when he talks about the popular Assassin’s Creed 2, implying that the series would take a more simplistic turn in terms of game design:

"It's a hugely complicated game, it has many different features, it's a long game, [and] getting people up to speed as quickly as possible is a big challenge. We know we have a learning curve, we know we need to introduce a lot of new mechanics, so what we looked at was reducing the time to assassinate. In AC3, we promise you that within 30 seconds of putting the disc in the tray, you will in fact be assassinating someone. That's a promise."

In an article written here at Gameranx earlier, it was noted that “according to Rob Cooper of Ubisoft, ‘This is a great time for gamers to join the adventure. There's a huge will from Ubisoft to bring more gamers into this universe.’”

So, with all of this said, the general hypothesis would be that Ubisoft is looking to change the series altogether. It seems like they will be trying to appeal to a newer audience, while still retaining their old fans. What do you think?
